The Olive Tree

Posted by God's Gentle Nurturer on 07-23-08

There are two varieties of olive tree, the cultivated variety Olea europaea sativa and the wild variety Olea europaea oleaster. The olive is unusual among trees in its duration of life, taking from six years in good conditions to twenty years in dry, difficult areas before it will start producing fruit.

The olive tree reproduces by sending up shoots from its roots. If not trimmed they surround the trunk, like the psalmist’s blessing of many children; “your children will be like olive shoots around your table. (Psalm 128:3)

The Olive tree is well known for it’s incredible ability to send up new shoots, even when the tree has been reduced to a mere stump. This gives the Olive tree a kind of immortality not enjoyed by other species.

The Israeli olive tree trunk below, for example, is completely lifeless, its fruitfulness long gone. But next to the base of this dead trunk are fresh, new shoots, all bursting forth with life. Though the cells of the trunk are lifeless, the roots are still producing life in the form of these green-leafed shoots.

We are called to a multi-generational faithfulness, a concept explained by Houston, Texas teacher and author Voddie Baucham as God’s intent for the home: “the place where Christian children are spiritually nurtured into mature adults who can influence all spheres of life for Christ. At the same time, every new generation of Christian parents must pass their faith on to their own children.”

With this concept, the responsibility of the parent reaches much further than their own children – their discipling will determine the discipleship of the following generation, and continue on well after the “trunk” has died. It’s a concept that should awaken parents to the very important role they play in the lives of their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on. We are the pivot in this present time that will determine the state of the family in years to come.

Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem,
and may you live to see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.

Multi-Generational Faith

Posted by God's Gentle Nurturer on 05-07-08

Children are more influenced by sermons you act than by sermons you preach.David McKay

You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine… so that no one will malign the word of God… In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us… so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. Titus 2:1-10

We are to “practice what [we] preach”. It is not enough to know, as my other post showed us, we must also apply and do! Not only for our own personal walk with the Lord but so the Word won’t be defamed. We are representing God Himself in our every day lives. If we fail to be examples of who God is and what He does in our lives, we then open the door for condemnation and blasphemy against the Word of God.

A Mother’s Prayer

Posted by God's Gentle Nurturer on 04-22-08

I’m a gardener of plants and a sculptor of stones (Psalm 144:12),
On a path of God only knows (Isaiah 55:8-9)
Trusting in Him to guide my ways (Psalm 25:4-5)
Striving to train, my children I raise (Proverbs 22:6)
With loving hands and tones (Ephesians 6:4).

A loving sacrifice I long to give (John 15:13)
so my children will know Jesus lives (Mark 16:6-7)
I hope to show them all He is (Hebrews 13:8)
And that everything created is His (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1)
And especially that He forgives (Matthew 26:28).

I want to be kind and gentle (Colossians 3:12)
Compassionate and sentimental (1 Peter 3:8)
To always leave a pondering heart (Psalm 111:2)
With something themselves to impart (Matthew 28:19)
To hold in their hearts what is so detrimental (John 5:24)

I want my touch to leave an impression (Romans 13:10; 1 Cor 13:4-8)
One that leaves them without question (James 1:6)
Of the message of love and of Christ (Romans 5:1-11)
So by darkness they may never be enticed (Proverbs 1:8-33)
And that through them souls will be won (Proverbs 11:30)!

Lord I pray that You would cover me
That though I fail, my children will see
That you are God and worthy of praise
That You protect us all our days
I stand on this promise, this covenant, this guarantee!

Amen.

“Do not be afraid… I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”

Genesis 15:1
